Itchy scalp and dandruff had been our ongoing problem at home. My husband fortunately has a healthy scalp and he has less hair (semi-kalbo). But me, I have long hair which is not thick naman but I have this hormone issues when my scalp gets too dry due to stress or the weather. My eldest daughter has a very thick hair and she sweats a lot. Most of the times, I see her scratching her head and told her to make sure that she’s washing her hair and scalp properly. Sometimes, the dandruff will go away, sometimes our scalps are itchy and flaky.

My eldest has thick hair while I have long (used to be much thicker) hair. Dandruff and itchy scalp can be a serious problem not only because it is unsightly to have those flakes but it can lead to scalp irritation.

Some people may think that dandruff is contagious. Hindi naman. But still, it’s not pleasing to look at and scratching your head again and again is very uncomfortable plus it damages the scalp. Sometimes, my daughter’s scalp can get too irritated she already has tiny scratches on it which sting when she takes a bath. What I did last time is I let her see a dermatologist. The dermatologist did not exactly prescribe a medicated shampoo but she prescribed the antibiotics and topical ointment to heal the irritation.

Since dandruff can be inevitable sometimes, and we don’t want the itchy scalp to come back, I thought using anti-dandruff shampoos will simply not be enough. I also find most of the dandruff shampoos available in the grocery to be too strong and dry up my hair. They can clean my hair, yes, but my hair kind of feel heavy with residues.

Selsun Blue, an over-the-counter medicated shampoo, as I’ve tried it these past few days, had been quite effective in removing our scalp’s itchiness and flakes. If you’ll remember this brand, it has been popular for many years when I was a lot younger. When the brand sent me an email about sending me some samples, I agreed since we regularly use anti-dandruff shampoos.  There are 2 variants in the market, the medicated treatment shampoo and the 2-in-1 shampoo with conditioner.

I let my daughter use the shampoo and conditioner while I used the medicated one. Both of these variants have Selenium Sulfide to control dandruff flaking and itching. They also have moisturizers which address my issue on dandruff shampoos that can dry up the hair. The 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner variant smells nice although you can still notice the faint medicated scent. My daughter said she likes how it smells and her hair feels soft after using it. I also rarely see her scratching these days.

As for me, the medicated variant has cool and soothing effect with it,  as it has added menthol as ingredient. The smell is also quite strong but when you rinse it thoroughly, the medicated smell fades away and a nicer and more subtle smell remains on my hair.

As I see it, Selsun Blue is not an ordinary dandruff shampoo. It’s a medicated over-the-counter shampoo which means it has ingredients which are targeted to control dandruff and prevent it from recurring.  A 120 ml bottle costs P335 while a 6ml sachet costs P34. I expected that these won’t come cheap because as I said, they are not ordinary shampoos which you will use forever. The bottles specifically mentioned that if your dandruff does not improve after regular use, you should stop and consult your doctor. For me, it’s a straightforward way of telling the consumer that the product works and if it doesn’t in your case, stop using it. To know more about Selsun Blue, go to http://www.selsunblue.com.ph.
