There are several magazines these days that I see from our local magazine stands which are colorful, glossy and inviting for our kids. When you check these magazines, they usually highlight teen celebrities and popular animation characters. Within their pages, you will also see sections for some art activities, teen surveys, or other entertaining topics which glue our kids for a couple of minutes.
There’s one magazine though titled “Mustard” which I have encountered recently which is quite apart from these glossy stuffs. It’s a humble 30-page mini-magazine for kids given to me as a complimentary copy. I was away then when the copy arrived and when I got back, my daughters had already read the magazine and they were too eager to bring the magazine to school to share it with their classmates.
As I checked the copy, I saw how the magazine integrates important values through their pages. This month of March, their theme is “Money Matters” . It teaches kids as young as six the importance of time which is perfect since vacation is fast approaching. There are also articles on how kids can earn as young as they are, and the importance of using God’s given talents. Aside from the theme articles, the mag has a section for Bible stories and verses explained to kids (non-sectarian). Talk about being spiritually healthy while learning and having fun!
I’ve learned from the magazine that Mustard was recognized as the Best Children’s Magazine at the 30th Catholic Mass Media Awards.
