This week, I had the opportunity to go with a group of mommy bloggers in the opening of Dr. Jesus Delgado Memorial Hospital’s First Time Mom Unit to the public. The happiness in the hospital was very obvious, with pink and white balloons everywhere, historical photos of the hospital, and the laughter of some of the doctors filling the lobby. Everyone was excited with the First Time Mom Unit, a small but cute, enclosed area inside DJDMH specially designed to assist soon-to-be first time moms. It will be more than a decade (I hope) before I get to think of my girls becoming first time moms but as I entered the hospital’s First Time Mom Unit and learned all about its purpose, I realized how helpful it will be to soon-to-be-moms.
Dr. Jesus Delgado Memorial Hospital is a veteran hospital when it comes to mother care. From a 4-bed facility, Delgado Maternity & Children’s Clinic became Dr. Jesus C. Delgado Memorial Hospital after 40 years. Through all those years, the hospital kept on upgrading their facilities and improving their services. No wonder people love the hospital. I must know because I know some of my school batch mates who gave birth in this hospital who shouted out how great the service is at Delgado.
Optimal Birth Outcome
The First Time Mom Unit’s primary focus is for soon-to-be-moms to have optimal birth outcome and the main advocate in the hospital is Dr. Rolando “Oyie” Balburias. Optimal Birth Outcome is the maternal care system in which the goal is not only for the mother to give birth to a healthy baby, but also for the mother to be physically and emotionally healthy before, during and after the pregnancy. It makes perfect sense because mothers and babies can be discharged from the hospital with good vital signs, but it’s equally important to make sure that they will also be healthy, happy and thriving when they are already at home.
With my experiences as a mother of two, I will have to attest that pregnancy should be taken more seriously than ever before. First of all, the living conditions these days may not be that good as before. It may seem that this generation has better technology, with all those gadgets and stuff, but when it comes to the quality of food and air, the number of diseases and viral cases, the steeper price of living, all these can be detrimental to a mother carrying a child. But through proper information and healthcare to a woman and her partner/husband while they are on planning stage until the woman gives birth, optimal birth outcome is highly possible.
First Time Mom Unit membership is currently FREE and women who are planning to get pregnant and are currently pregnant are encouraged to get their membership card. Part of the initial offering of this unit is a FREE seminar on Optimal Birth Outcome.
