If your child is planning to to take up a course that belongs to Science and Technology, don’t miss this scholarship which the DOST (Department of Science and Technology- Science Education Institute) is giving. I was just glad that my daughter, when she got into high school, she was proactive enough on her own in knowing the different scholarships that were available. Actually, we both have found out that there are more out there when it was at least almost the end of the year. She was able to submit all the requirements for DOST scholarship which started accepting applications since December 2021 and blessed to be included in this year’s roster of scholars.
This year 2022, there were 10,487 students who made it in the list. I was amazed by the sheer number of new scholars and I felt thankful to the government that they are giving this huge budget so that thousands of students will have a chance to study in college. Imagine if all these 10K students will be able to graduate and be professionals, how much money and development can they bring to the country, ideally speaking.
We’ve attended the online zoom meeting on how the process of availing the scholarship will be done, and of course the details of what the benefits will be. The students were divided into batches and everyone was given a specific day when they can attend the zoom meeting. It was a successful one and I have to commend the people in DOST for explaining the system in the clearest way they could.
In summary (or so that I have remembered without looking at my notes and screenshots that I got from the zoom meeting):
–P40,000 tuition fee subsidy per year ( for 4 years ) + including midyear tuition fee if the course requires it
–P7,000 monthly stipend for the scholars which will be deposited to the Landbank account that they need to open/link to their scholar’s account
–P10,000 learning materials and/or connectivity allowance per year
– 1 time clothing allowance, insurance and graduation/thesis allowance
The catch? The scholars need to render service in the country equivalent to the number of years that they benefited from the scholarship, so 4 years. They won’t be able to work outside of the country within that period or they will need to pay back the amount the equivalent amount that they got from the scholarship.
For us, the required years of service were just befitting to the benefits that will be given to the scholars and the country needs intelligent students and professionals to work here in the country. As much as OFWs are considered heroes, those who are working and paying taxes inside the country should be considered heroes as well.
We’ve advised our daughter to make use of the scholarship to the full, manage her allowances wisely as she is now an adult, take it as an opportunity to learn managing her money wisely, study hard to be worthy of the blessings that she is reaping from the government, from us her parents, and from the Lord who gave her health and intelligence. When she graduates, she will be able to apply everything she have studied and use it to better herself and her country. If ever she decides to work overseas, she will be free to do so, given the experiences that she will get from serving her country first.
For the rest of us, I think we should be more thankful of the government for provisions like these. There are people that are honestly working for the citizens and they are doing good in their job. The least we can do is to believe in the system, stop complaining and help everyone in our families be better citizens.
What about you, what do you think of these kinds of scholarships?
