If you have plans in going to Megamall, there’s a cool place there where they make ice cream in front of you. Yes. It’s kinda unique because usually, ice cream booths have their flavors displayed and you will just pick your flavor.
Kool Kids though uses a unique process in making their ice cream, which is by using liquid nitrogen. If you are curious about “liquid nitrogen”, according to Wikipedia, it’s nitrogen in liquid form. Nitrogen is a safe element which is one of the components of the air we breathe. When in liquid form, it is crystal clear like water and you can pour it in the food you are preparing. Once the liquid touch your food, it will freeze in seconds.
Liquid nitrogen is not at all new when it comes to freezing ice cream. Actually, the owner of Kool Kids himself Miguel Arranaz, admitted that Philippines is quite late when it comes to this aspect. I remember, I use to watch Top Chef ( a contest of the best chefs in town in USA) and some of the contestants there were using liquid nitrogen, and that was a few years back. But looking at the bright side of it, at least, the technology is here already and we have entrepreneurs already gaining from this technology to provide us new food varieties.
Kool Kids Ice Cream
Last Saturday, we have this pleasure of meeting up with the members of Mommy Bloggers Philippines and try Kool Kids’ ice creams. Mr. Arranaz explained and showed us how they store their liquid nitrogen and how the ice cream are easily processed. There were at least 10 moms present with their kids and some with their hubbies. We’ve tried several flavors like Nutella, Cookies and Cream, Vanilla, & Salt & Caramel. My easy favorite was Salt & Caramel, while the kids loved Cookies and Cream (look at the top photos!).
They stock the liquid nitrogen in a tank, fill the flask with the liquid, and then pour the liquid to the ice cream base whenever they need to serve ice cream
Kool Kids offer a modestly sized scoop of ice cream and it will make you feel full already before you even finish one scoop. Their ice creams are very creamy and flavorful and each cup is topped with a small circular crispy waffle. Because they make their ice cream in small batches only, you know your ice cream was made fresh, not that standing for a long time in their display cart. Kool Kids also offer pastries aside from ice cream. Their chocolate chip cookies are huge and the chocolates used inside are sweet and delicious.
Whisky Flavored Ice Cream and Party Packages
One new thing I learned from Kool Kids is that they are able to create ice creams infused with alcoholic drinks (FOR ADULTS ONLY). I was able to taste one scoop of ice cream with whiskey. As I am not a drinker ( the hardest drink I can bear to take in is San Mig Light), I couldn’t appreciate it very much but I am certain that drinkers will definitely love this treat. Kool Kids cater to parties and as they can customize their ice creams pretty easily, it won’t be surprising if the business looks good in the future. After all, Filipinos love sweets and the craving for ice cream never dies.

Sigh I wish I was there! I missed it. 🙁
My boys would LOVE that. Seriously, how cool!
My dad used to make ice cream with liquid nitrogen for us! He worked in a lab and would bring it home every once in awhile. He would also freeze strawberries and grapes that we would shatter with a hammer — SO much fun!
Oh wow – that’s really cool! Sounds like special memories.
The first time I heard about and was introduced to liquid nitrogen was when I was working in a research laboratory. We used it to freeze plant cells which will be used for ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) for research studies. It’s nice to know that it is now being used for making ice cream. That sounds and for sure tastes good. Thank you for sharing. 🙂
I want some of this! I would be all over that Nutella flavor and the Whiskey flavor sounds really interesting. I would have wanted to try all of the alcohol flavors.
We have a place like that in Chicago. I forgot the name, but we went there about a year ago. Reminds me I need to stop by there again. I don’t think they did alcohol though…that interesting! -Jillian Fisher
That is so neat! My kids would love to see that happen – we will definitely have to visit!
