How Bad Is Too Much Computer/Gadget Time For The Eyes?

How much time do your kids spend in looking at their gadgets and computer screen monitor? My kids spend at least an hour ( note: at least) a day using their cellphones and the computer. We try limiting their computer use but we can’t help it. We work at home and working in front of the computer is our bread and butter. Although we always try to tell them that what we do is all for work, we unintentionally become bad examples to our kids.

How Bad Is Too Much Computer/Gadget Time?

Telling kids to stop doing something is not that easy, unless your child is just the obedient, ok-no question at all-follow type. So I tried to find some info online that can help and then tell them to my kids in some ways we both can understand each other.

First, what is blue light? Blue light is one kind of light that we see daily and it’s not literally “blue color”. It’s just the term used for this kind of light to differentiate it from other kinds of light that compose the sunlight or the “white” light that we normally see around us during daytime or outdoors. The main source of blue light is the sun, but indoors, the blue light comes from what else, the usual electronic devices we have at home, the fluorescent lamps, LED tvs, computers and smartphones. Which means, we are exposed to some kind of sunlight when we look at all these.

We all know that looking direct to the sun when we are outdoors will be bad for our eyes because we feel that it hurts our eyes when we do it. But indoors, we will be doing the same with our eyes when we look at all these gadgets and screens for a long time. Do the math and compute the time that you spend looking at all these screens. Little by little, as we do this bad habit of looking at the computer or watching tv without any protection for our eyes, we are actually hurting our eyes. All these “blue light” will be absorbed by the eyes and can degenerate them.

Are All Blue Lights Bad?

From the same source, blue light is not that bad. Just like its source, the sunlight, blue light helps brighten our mood and make us alert. But during the night, we don’t want to have too much of it because it can disrupt our sleeping patterns. That’s why kids are not advised to watch TV, play games or use gadgets an hour or two before bedtime because they will most probably have difficulty sleeping.

Why Use Protective Glasses Against Blue Light

There are other protections parents can install to lessen exposure to blue light at home. There are screen filters for computers and tempered glass for smartphones and tables. But protective eye wear like Sunnies Specs Kids can be much more effective, as a parent’s opinion, because it’s much closer to the eyes, it can be carried and worn anywhere, and it looks cool!

Sunnies Specs Kids with Screen Safe comes with the special kids frames and Screen Safe-ready lenses. I love the design, the color of the frame, the pretty cloth to wipe the lenses and the sturdy case. Sunnies Specs are so lightweight too. I tried it and it feels like I’m wearing nothing because it’s too light.

The protective eye wear against blue light is a great investment to keep my daughter’s eyes healthy and free from eye strain even on those days she really need to stay long researching in the computer. I want her to have the healthiest pair of eyes so she can enjoy doing things by herself and with me, with the family, throughout her life. Isn’t that what all parents wish for their kids.

Sunnies Specs Kids is available in Sunnies Specs stores in Metro Manila and provincial stores. You may want to check them out the next time you go out with your kids!
