Why Teens of Voting Age Should Use Their Right to Vote

Last year 2022, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. signed into law RA No. 11935, rescheduling the barangay and SK elections from December 2022 to the last Monday of October 2023. Which means both of my kids can now exercise their right to vote this coming week. Despite the widespread distrust in the government of many citizens, we as a family still believes that the right to vote is one of the fundamental pillars of a democratic society, and it is a privilege that empowers citizens to shape the future of their nation.

Barangay & SK Election Philippines 2023 – Are your teens ready to vote?

So how do you encourage your teens to vote this coming election? Well, honestly, we try to talk about it by putting these topics in our day to day conversations. We know that teens can either be too politically headstrong or they just prefer to talk about other teen issues other than politics. But when you do have the opportunity, try to discuss the following with your teens:

  1. Voting means having a voice in the decision-making process

As teenagers transition into adulthood, they begin to take on responsibilities in various aspects of their lives. Voting is a natural extension of this transition, as it allows young adults to have a say in decisions that impact their future. By participating in elections, teens can voice their concerns, values, and beliefs, and influence the direction their country takes on critical issues, such as education, healthcare, and the environment.

  1. Influencing policy decisions

Young adults often have a unique perspective on societal issues, which can bring fresh ideas and innovative solutions to the table. When teens vote, they contribute to the diversity of voices in the political landscape, helping to ensure that policies reflect the interests and needs of all citizens, not just those of older generations. This can lead to more well-rounded, inclusive, and forward-thinking policies.

  1. Encouraging civic responsibility

Voting at a young age fosters a sense of civic responsibility and engagement. By participating in elections, teens become more informed and connected to the world around them. This engagement can lead to increased political awareness, a better understanding of the democratic process, and a desire to actively participate in their communities, thereby strengthening the overall health of democracy.

  1. Ensuring representation

Teenagers deserve to be represented in government, just like any other demographic. By voting, they send a clear message to politicians and decision-makers that they are a force to be reckoned with. This can encourage candidates to consider the interests of young voters and work towards policies that address their concerns, thus creating a more inclusive political landscape.

  1. Shaping their own future

As young adults, teenagers have a personal stake in the decisions made by government, which will shape their future. Decisions regarding education, job opportunities, healthcare, and environmental policies will directly impact their lives. By voting, they have the power to influence these decisions and work toward creating a better, more prosperous future for themselves and future generations.

  1. Honoring the sacrifices of past generations

Throughout history, countless individuals have fought for the right to vote. Teenagers of voting age should remember the sacrifices made by those who came before them, including women, minorities, and activists who fought for universal suffrage. By exercising their right to vote, young adults honor this legacy and contribute to the ongoing struggle for a more inclusive and equitable democracy.

Our teens should understand that by participating in elections, they can ensure that their voices are heard, that their perspectives are considered, and that the policies that govern their lives reflect their aspirations and values.

In a democratic society, the right to vote is a powerful tool that enables citizens to have a say in the governance of their nation. For teenagers of voting age, embracing this right is not only a responsibility but also an opportunity to shape their own future and the future of their country. By participating in elections, young adults can ensure that their voices are heard, that their perspectives are considered, and that the policies that govern their lives reflect their aspirations and values. Voting is not just a right; it is a crucial step in the journey towards active citizenship and a better tomorrow.
